What is a truck scale called? Do you know?

Truck scales go by a variety of names, with different terms used in different contexts, but they all refer to the same thing—the large weighing device used for weighing trucks. Below are common names used within and outside the industry, along with their applicable scenarios:

I. Official Names: Used in Documents and Reports

• Truck Scale

The globally accepted standard name, used in contracts and technical manuals.

Weighbridge

Commonly used in the UK and Australia, emphasizing the scale platform resembling a "bridge" spanning a foundation pit.

II. Driver Slang: Jargon in the Freight Industry

• The Scales

Used in driver radio conversations: "I'm in line at the scales on Highway 5, probably half an hour."

• Chicken Coop

North American slang: Because early weigh stations were rudimentary like chicken coops, now refers to highway inspection station weighbridges.
Example: "I'll be off work after passing the chicken coop at the state border."

• Weighing Room

Chinese driver slang specifically referring to a weigh station with an office: "Hand the freight bill to the weighing room for stamping."

III. Structural Breakdown: Repairman's Terminology

• Axle Scales

Small scales that only weigh individual axles (commonly portable).

• Full-Length Scale

A giant scale platform that covers the entire vehicle (standard in logistics parks).

• Pit Scale

A scale buried underground, with the platform flush with the road surface (requires excavation of a foundation pit, high cost).

IV. Special Scenario Names: Function Determines the Name

Use Scenario Industry Term Naming Origin
Waste Transfer Station Trash Scale Dedicated to weighing garbage trucks; fees calculated per ton
Quarry Site Quarry Pad Directly refers to the weighing area (industry field term)
Border Checkpoint Port of Entry Combines customs functions with weighing; renamed "Entry Weigh Station"

V. Cautionary Note: Don't Confuse These Terms!

• Weight Station → Correct term is Weigh Station
• Truck Balance → Balance is a physics concept, only Scale is used for weighbridges
• CAT Scale : A North American chain brand of weighbridges, like the "McDonald's of weighbridges"
